Strasbourg Christmas Market Dates and Opening Hours
What the city has actually confirmed, what comes from the pattern of past editions, and the exact hours day by day, including the odd week after Christmas Eve.
The most common question before any trip here: when exactly, and until what time? This page keeps the two things apart that most guides mix up, what the city has actually confirmed and what merely follows the pattern of recent years.
Dates: where things stand today
At the time of this update, the city of Strasbourg has not published official dates for the coming edition.
That is the normal process, not a delay. The dates are fixed each year by a municipal order issued in the autumn, and until then the official site says only that the programme is still taking shape behind the scenes.
Treat any site already showing exact dates with suspicion. We found several foreign travel portals doing precisely that, contradicting one another: one gives 27 November to 27 December, another 26 November to 24 December. Neither is confirmed by the city.
This page is updated on the day of the official announcement. Until then, the pattern of recent editions lets you plan with very little risk.
The pattern of recent editions

The logic has been stable for years: opening on the Wednesday or Thursday of the last week of November, closing on 24 December in the late afternoon. In short, late November to 24 December.
If you have to book before the dates become official, the window of 1 to 23 December is statistically safe. The market has been running in that window in every edition on record.
Chalet opening hours, day by day
- Opening day: starts in the early afternoon, at 2pm in the 2025 edition.
- Normal running: daily, 11.30am to 9pm. That was the official timing of the 2025 edition, identical on weekdays and at weekends.
- 24 December: 11.30am to 6pm, an early close for Christmas Eve. The Marché OFF closes at 6pm too.
There is no closing day. The market runs straight through, Sundays included, which is worth knowing if you are used to markets that take a day off mid-week.
The days after Christmas Eve
After 24 December part of the city carries on in a reduced form, billed as Christmas atmospheres rather than a market. Based on how recent editions have been run:
- 25 December: 11.30am to 6pm. Note that Christmas Day is a strongly observed public holiday in Alsace under local law. Many stalls stay shut, and both the Village du Partage on Place Kléber and the producers' market on Square Louise Weiss are closed that day.
- 26 and 27 December: 11.30am to 9pm at the sites still running.
Do not plan your main visit after 24 December. What is left is thin. If your trip falls in exactly that week, the Colmar Christmas market is the better call: it runs 23 November to 29 December 2026, with the food market and the big wheel going on until 3 January.
The consolation is real, though. The illuminations stay on between Christmas and New Year and the city is far emptier. For a quiet walk through a lit old town, that is the best week of the year.
The illuminations and the Great Tree
The lights come on every evening at dusk, which in December in Strasbourg means around 4.30 to 5pm. That half hour, with the lights on and the sky still blue, is the single best moment of the day.
They are not confined to the market squares. Practically every lane on the Grande Île is decorated, and a few streets, rue Mercière facing the cathedral and rue des Orfèvres among them, are some of the most photographed in France.
The Great Tree on Place Kléber, roughly thirty metres tall, is lit separately each evening. It stays standing well past 24 December and is still there in the first days of January, long after the chalets have gone.
The opening ceremony
The official opening happens on the first day of the market, traditionally built around the first lighting of the Great Tree in the evening. The exact time is announced each year with the official programme, and we add it here as soon as it is published.
