Barrage Vauban: the best free view in Strasbourg

Built at the end of the seventeenth century to plans by Vauban, the military engineer of Louis XIV, this is not a bridge but a dam: lowering its gates flooded the whole south of the city and made an assault impossible. Today it serves mainly as a viewing platform, and it is the best free one in Strasbourg.

What to see

The covered gallery holds casts of sculptures, and the stairs lead up to the panoramic terrace. From there the towers of the Ponts Couverts line up in the foreground, the roofs of La Petite France spread out behind them, and the cathedral spire closes the view. This is the photograph everyone is after.

When to go

At sunset for the light, or early in the morning to have the terrace to yourself. The Google rating is excellent on a very large number of reviews, which says a good deal about the return on effort: five minutes of stairs, no queue.

The detail nobody notices

From the terrace, look west: the long glass building on the bank is the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art. The footbridge that links it to the dam lets you do both without a detour.

The full walk through the quarter is in our guide to La Petite France.
