At a price point where "spa" usually means a slightly better shower cubicle, the Monopole Métropole puts up a genuine sauna and hammam pair, in Art Deco surroundings that are carefully kept. Opposite the station and ten minutes' walk from the Grande Île, it is the city's budget wellness answer.
The rooms and the spa
Three-star rooms without pretension but properly maintained, some of them in the Art Deco spirit of the house, and a relaxation area that outclasses the category. The buffet breakfast comes in for regular praise.
Booking tip
For a weekend arriving by train the sum is hard to beat: step off, drop the suitcase three minutes later, and keep what you saved for the winstubs, the small Alsatian taverns. In December it is one of the last reasonably priced addresses still showing availability.
Book this hotel: for a stay during the Christmas market, book several weeks ahead. It is the busiest fortnight of the Strasbourg year and the good rooms go first.
