Museum of Modern Art Strasbourg: the glass hall

Set on the bank of the Ill, directly opposite the Barrage Vauban, the glass and metal building designed by Adrien Fainsilber and opened in 1998 is arranged around a great glazed hall that feeds the galleries. It is the sharpest counterpoint to the medieval city, five minutes from La Petite France.

The collections

A route that runs from the end of the nineteenth century to work being made now: impressionism and art nouveau, then the twentieth-century avant-gardes, a cabinet of prints, drawings and photography, and temporary exhibitions that often make an event of themselves. The Jean Arp collection, the artist being a son of the city, holds a place of its own.

How long to allow

An hour and a half for the permanent collections, two hours with a temporary exhibition on top. The restaurant terrace on the top floor gives a view over the Ponts Couverts that is worth the break on its own.

When to go

The museum is closed on Tuesdays and fills up mainly on weekend afternoons. On a wet weekday it is one of the best plans in the city, all the more so because the footbridge links it straight to the Barrage Vauban.
