L'Ami Fritz: the jacuzzi facing the Ottrott vines
A jacuzzi turned towards the vines and a Bib Gourmand restaurant below Mont Sainte-Odile: L'Ami Fritz is the Alsatian country inn by the book.

The verdict
At Ottrott, a wine village below Mont Sainte-Odile, L'Ami Fritz ticks both boxes of the ideal Alsatian stay: a wellness area whose jacuzzi looks out over the vines, and a kitchen awarded a Bib Gourmand in the Michelin guide, the mark given for good value rather than for luxury.
The rooms and the spa
Comfortable inn rooms spread across the village, and that signature moment: the whirlpool bath at sunset over the vineyard, before dinner. The red wine of Ottrott, a rarity in a region of whites, belongs on the table.
Booking tip
Say it plainly: this one assumes a car. Trains run down the foothill line to Obernai without difficulty, but the last stretch to Ottrott, and above all the climb to Mont Sainte-Odile, are not reasonably done without one.
With a car it is one of the finest escapes from Strasbourg: the mountain, its views over the Alsace plain, the autumn colours above all. Without one, read whether you need a car in Alsace first.
Book this hotel: for a stay during the Christmas market, book several weeks ahead. It is the busiest fortnight of the Strasbourg year and the good rooms go first.
