Brasserie de la Bourse: the big brasserie by the Ill
The classic big brasserie on the bank of the Ill: served every day until 11pm, €31 to €45 a head, and festive menus you can only book by phone.

The verdict
Ten minutes on foot from the cathedral, on the other side of the Ill, the Brasserie de la Bourse offers what the saturated centre no longer can: a big classic brasserie room, service running through to 11pm every day, and space even when the city is overflowing. The 4.4 on Google, on more than 1,300 reviews, rewards a house that does the job the old way: Alsatian and French cooking, waiters in aprons, steadiness.
What to eat
The double repertoire of the brasserie and the winstub, the winstub being the traditional Alsatian tavern: choucroute (sauerkraut with pork), tartes flambées (wafer thin cream and bacon tarts), meat and fish, for a recorded budget of €31 to €45 a head. Over the holidays the house serves Christmas and New Year menus that can only be booked by phone.
Visiting tip
This is the stress free address of December: when the whole centre is full, the Bourse often still has a table, and its late service lets you eat after the illuminations. The walk back along the lit up Ill is a bonus.
